Same phenomena here.... A couple of nights ago I was listening to K9DX, a
few hundred miles to my south, hand out S5 - S6 reports to EU, when I could
only tell when the dx was present or absent by subliminal changes in the
noise level, but not recover any decipherable CW... Just the few degrees of
difference in passing through the auroral zone makes that much difference in
propagation...
