Last winter I experimented with some homebrew indoor loops to see
what they might do for me. Unfortunately, results were inconclusive,
as I set them up in an unfavorable location.
Instead of ground radials, I have an overhead counterpoise of
wires 3 feet apart, that lay on the roof of my house and garage.
Naturally, my shack is right under the counterpoise, and the test
loops were in the shack.
However, one loop showed promise, so I'm going to build a more
robust version and put it outside above the counterpoise, and
use a TV rotator to turn it.
As you probably know, there is no gain in these receiving loops.
That comes from a preamp if you use one.
Their main contribution is in allowing you to null interference,
whether strong signals or just local noise. Correct siting is
necessary to obtain the full benefit of the loops They can be a
very useful supplement to a station antenna for problem situations.

I'm still struggling with trying to improve my receive antenna situation.
Despite everyone's good intentions, I simply do not have the room to put up
a flag or pennant or even a K9AY loop and get any clearance from the
transmit antennas. I have tried a coaxial loop and, if I can ever get my
PT3 modified by the friend who has it, I can try it again. However, I
wonder if anyone on the list has tried the Palomar or Kiwa indoor loops and,
if you have, what is your opinion of them compared to other types of low
noise antennas?
