In that case, even if you do get the currents equal in magnitude and in
the correct phase relative to each other at the feed points, the current
distribution over the whole of each vertical is not necessarily the
same, nor is the radiation efficiency of the two elements equal. So you
would not get "textbook results". My guess is that you would still get
gain, at much reduced front to back ratio.
