I had to do that last fall.  It wasn't easy!  I tried a metal detector but 
it didn't work out so well.  It just didn't seem to find them when I knew 
they were there somewhere.

I tried dragging a pickaxe over the ground but that didn't do much either.

What worked for me was using a weed wacker.  I used it sideways, so as to 
cut a line right into the ground.  It would get hung up on a radial, but it 
wouldn't break it.  Since the wire has worked itself into the ground pretty 
good in the two years they have been down, the weed wacker can't pull them 
up, make them spin around, etc., they way it would if you were to take a 
weed wacker to a wire that's just laying on the ground.
