2 days ago a 600 plus foot tower owned by WOLX (94.1 FM) on the Baraboo
bluffs, 40 miles northwest of Madison, WI came crashing down. The weather
here has been unusually warm for this time of year, with lots of freezing
rain. Additionally, the bluff area has fog and lots of moisture condensation
during weather of this type, with resulting additional icing. From news
reports it appears that the cause of the failure was serial guy wire
breaking. The tower was built in 1948. Winds at the time were negligable. No
casualties, but a garage was hit and a house occupied by 4 people barely
missed.
