I like to use insulated stranded wire, #16 or #18.
Smaller is too easy to break and heavier seems to
be overkill.
Stranded wire is less likely to kink and break and the
insulation provides some extra strength. It is also
easy to splice if it does break!
Yes, if you get the wire down on the ground, the grass
will grow over it in a few weeks of growth and you can
mow right over it.
