i have plans and software for a rotor controller that i made for
the yaesu g-xxxxsdx rotor controllers. its based on a commercial
controller that has built in a/d converters and only neede a couple
transistors to drive the control lines of the yaesu rotors. with
a couple small relays it could probably driver any other rotor
that has an analog indicator circuit.

for the plans and software see:
http://www.berkshire.net/~robbins/software.html#rotor

as far as 8 bits, that will give you 256 steps or about 1.5 degree
resolution assuming you scale the voltage to use all the bits.
