The method described appears to be to construct a right angle from the
right angled iscocelies triangle, ie, two side and two angle the same in a
right angle triangle. The difficult part maybe contructing the right
angle. The formula is h**2 = a**2 + b**2 or in this specific case, h**2 =
2*s**2, that is, the hypontenuse squared is equal to 2 times the side
squared, eg 2 squared = 2 * 1**2, so the two sides would be 1 unit and the
hypontensue would be 1.14142 units. Multiply the units by anything that is
OK for the space you have available. The longer, the better but again the
rule of diminishing returns, Rich gives an example using 200ft.

Triangulation, mmm some basic formulae.
To obtain a right angle use a triangle with sides of 3, 4, & 5 units. Can
even be made of rope with flags at each of the measurements, and the rope
tied as a circle, pull out at each measurement to for a right angle
triangle. h**2 = a**2 + b**2 or the hypontenuse squared is equal to the
sum of the base squared and the altitude squared.
60 degrees is formed by having all sides of the triangle equal or one unit
each. 45 by forming the right angle then making a second triangle with
both the a and b sides equal in length.
I have seen these basics used to plot and layout some fairly good plots.
