Joe,
I ran into the same problem and finally ended up notching out the sides of
the triangular mounting plate. Since I used a thrust bearing I was not
concerned with the weight carrying capacity of the plate and there was more
than enough 'meat' left to resist any torque related damage. It even held up
when a windstorm brought down our 60 foot Oak which in turn brought down my
60ft tower. I would relieve or avoid sharp corners when you make your
cutouts though. Don't know how likely stress cracks are to develop but a few
seconds with a sharp drill bit eliminate the bulk of that potential problem.
However, before you even cut your mounting plate, consider how you are
going to get the rotor into the tower at someplace other than a joint, and
whether the rotor can turn freely at a location other than the joint. Both
issues bit me big time and I still ended up cutting braces. That area too
held up when everything came crashing down but it never gave me any good
feelings while it was that way!
In my new installation I am splicing a section of thinner wall 1026 tubing
onto the end of my mast. This thinner section (.125 vs .185) will be
contained within the tower and will be managed by two thrust bearings, one
on the top plate and another at some 'to-be-determined' spot between the top
plate and the rotor. This extension will allow me to place the rotor at the
joint even though I will be using a Yaesu 1000DXA and would probably not
have the issues I had with my Ham-M regarding clearance.
  Good luck and DX de

Mike / W8DN
