Wow 8ft deep? What kind of tower are you putting up and what kind of soil are 
you in?
I just planted my bases for my 2 100 ft towers and dug roughly 3x3x4 to 5 ft 
holes with a small kubota backhoe I rented. I was going to go a little deeper 
but ran into nearly solid rock and decided they were not going to move.
The backhoe is the easiest, though less aerobic, way to go. A good operator can 
dig down without making a huge hole though it does take a little longer when 
trying not to disturb the surrounding ground too much. I am not sure about 8 ft 
though, you may have to do the last bit by hand. But a little digging is better 
than allot of digging IMHO.
