Hello,

Stainless steel bolts and nuts were used on my 130 ft 25 tower when Hurricane Isabel turned it into a pretzel (80 ft pine tree fell across a set of guys). Some of the bolts bent, but none sheared. The ones that bent had ripped the tower leg rather than break. At 09:29 AM 1/19/05, you wrote:
Rohn bolts for 25 are fine threaded and are grade 5. However, they usually
turn to rust in a short period of time.

My advice for guys putting up short tower (40-50) is to pick up galvanized
bolts at the local hardware store.

I'm no engineer, but the downward force of 200 lb. of tower and some guy
tension is not going to shear the bolts. I've seen a fair amount collapsed tower
and have never seen any bolt shear.
