Is there any less costly way to accomplish and maintain mast stability?

Although I've never tried it, a fixture like a bearing plate could made out
of heavy plywood.
Make the hole for the mast large enough that the mast will be free when its
in the rotor, but small enough to keep it from wandering during installation.
Some other material may be a better choice if you're intending on leaving it
up there.
