Well.. what might be good/standard practice in the commercial world may not
be needed in the amateur world. It's all about risk acceptance. Consider
transient protection for ham gear.. one could take the commercial approach
and protect everything 17 different ways ( a good idea if that gear is
supporting your income), or, I can do nothing, and be willing to lose it
all in the unlikely (here in SoCal) event of a nearby lightning strike.
For myself, assuming that I've convinced myself that I'm not going to burn
down the house, I'd be more interested in improving RF performance, and
risking the radios getting destroyed. If my radios got fried, say, once
every 10 years, and I spent $2000 on them, that's $200/yr. I can make the
personal decision that I'd rather spend my time fooling with radios than
digging ditches, driving rods, and touching off CadWelds.
If I lived in the Midwest, the mountains, or Florida, I might have a
different opinion, since the "fried radios/year" ratio would be very different.
Likewise, if I were asked to design a system for a client, I'd make sure I
considered their particular risk acceptance posture, and it might very well
not be the same as mine. Maybe they've got half a million dollars in
one-of-a-kind measurement equipment hooked to that antenna system.
