Lance,

I had the 60' version of the EZ Way up about ten years at a previous QTH.
It was given to me about 1985, and I gave it to another Ham when I moved.
It is an interesting tower with unique features.

After inspecting it carefully for welds, etc., the first thing I did was to
make the *wonder post* a bit stronger than originally built. Like you, I
cut the post when I obtained the tower, then I added a new section about six
feet long as I recall that telescoped over the original. It was made of 1/4
inch steel, the I added better *fins* - four at 90 degree angles, each four
feet long. These were also 1/4 inch steel. A multi-man crew is needed to
handle the resultant weight.

The new hole was dug only as large as necessary, then the soil was replaced
and *water tamped" with a 4x4 every six inches. No concrete was used, and
it was very solid, indeed a wonder!

I first had an A-3 on it, until the cable broke while cranking it up/down, I
don't recall which, when the tower bottomed out, the elements of the A-3
ricocheted up then of course back down, and broke showering me with pieces
of aluminum. A little dramatic to witnesses I am told.

After replacing the cable with aircraft cable, I mounted a Mosley TA-53.
This worked well for some years. The EZ Way now lives in Iowa and continues
to serve its new owner, with a larger beam.

Both locations were sheltered by trees. IMHO a 40 meter beam would be
pushing it, especially if your location is in the open. A C-3 or equivalent
would be my choice today.

GL, it is a neat tower, let us know how your installation works out,

73, Phil, K9PJ
