That would give me the longer wire connected to the center
lead.  Any advantage in doing this?

We know from mobile shootout measurements that the farther the loading coil is located away from the feedpoint, the stronger the radiated signal. This, no doubt, holds true for loaded dipoles. Of course, the farther away from the feedpoint that a loading coil is located, the more inductance is required for resonance.
