There is no way to prevent a lightning strike, you just need a system that can 
dissipate the energy.  A ground rod on each leg of a tower is not a very good 
lightning ground.  You need to spread out dozens of ground rods in perhaps a 
50' radius from the tower base.  I used 2" copper strap instead of heavy wire.

Not really.  You should have a ground rod for each leg of the tower.  
You could put a ring around the tower if you wanted.  The idea is to 
dissipate static and attempt to prevent a lightning strike.  If you get 
one #2 or # 10 won't matter.
