Personally, and I have put up and taken down a thousand feet of 25/45/55
tower, I would not put a drop of grease on them. Sooner or later it is on
you, your belt, gloves and whatever. Others have mentioned other anti-seize
compounds, powders, creams, and ointments. Too each his own. I hose out the
legs to make sure they are clear of...stuff. And always run a ground rod or
something SOLID straight through the leg to make sure the last guy didn't
leave the BOLTS up in the leg as they were shipped form the manufacturer.
Funny how many times you will find them, still up there. But in my case I
avoid the lubes but have used a little WD-40 which will eventually wash off
if it runs out. Good luck in any event. -M

I agree to a point. Most ham radio uses for Rohn 45G and 55G do not come
close to the vertical strength rating of these towers. I used plain axle
grease on the legs of my 150 foot 45, more to help with assembly than taking
apart. I would not use any kind of lube on the bolts as they are
galvanized.

In my opinion, I would never use any lube on tower sections where they join.
Read the ROHN on-line manual or even call the company and ask their opinion.
It reduces the strength of the joint, putting most of the weight on the
bolts. I'd much rather use a tower jack to get them apart, rather than lube
the sections. The 25G and 45G both use the friction of the galvanized joint
to add strength. I do use never seize on the bolts. I use a taper pin
punch to enlarge the holes "when necessary" if the galvanizing prevents the
bolts from going in easily. They should be a snug fit and according to the
manual, never screwed in using the threads to force the bolt in, nor should
the bolt holes be reamed.
73 and good luck,
