Left open at either end so air can get in may cause condensation to form
inside the conduit and over time to build up depending on temps and relative
humidity. Sealing the ends will prevent that.
Wood plugs work. Flashing makes a good critter proof barrier, aluminum or
galvanized. Just cut to fit with snips and silicone into place. Easy to
remove when you want to get access.
