Doug, there are a couple of issues that I have found that show the same things you are seeing on my 7/8 Hardline. One was a carbonized path through the dielectric that I assume was lightning strike damage from ground proximity. The other was a "kink" that was formed in the copper outer jacket from a sizable tree branch that fell on it. Both displayed exactly what you are seeing after I did some of the same things that you did.
