Most professional installers crimp the coax connectors when possible.
If it's good enough for them, it's good for me!

Tony,

The reason is that some of us old school hams like myself have always soldered
the connectors in the past and now after adopting the
new crimp connectors, are still anal about soldering the center pin. Maybe it
is not really needed for insurance on the center pin electrical
connection, and yes it is aother step, but it makes me feel better. hihi

A few years back I switched over from soldered to crimped PL-259 connectors

crimping both the shield and center conductor. Why would I want to also solder
the center conductor after crimping? What does that buy me? Doesn't that defeat
the reason for buying crimp connectors - ease of installation?

According to the specification the center pin is soldered, so DO NOT Attempt to
crimp the center pin.

Purchase some proper coax prep tools it will make the easier and more
consistant.

DX Engineering sells the prep tools, crimpers, and connectors. Be sure to use
Amphenol connectors with the correct part number for the cable your using.

I always put a little flux on the center conductor before I crimp it,
then solder.

Hi Bob,

Every site that I've visited dealing with this product shows them to

I use the DX Engineering Ultra-Grip 2 Crimp Connector Tool Kit, the
DX Engineering RG-213 cable, and Amphenol 182102 no solder crimp
connectors (both shield and pin are crimped - no soldering
required). This combination has provided beautiful results for me
without any problems. I will never go back to PL-259's that
require solder.

Amphenol UHF crimp connectors from DX Engineering are reasonably
priced but can usually be found at slightly lower cost from the
major electronic parts suppliers.
