Hello fellow contesters! K4UVA will be up and running from FM17fo on 6
and 2 meters running 100 watts. You guys to the north of Richmond are
going to have some nasty weather to contend with from the looks of
things. Please look south to Richmond as I'm hoping I'll be able to have
the antennas up and running by the start of the contest.

The N2MH Rover will once again take to the roads for the next running
of the ARRL January VHF Contest. Weather permitting, here is our
planned route. Each stop will be for a period of several hours. We will
make contacts in motion for grids shown as Passing through.

leave the APRS on for a few minutes when we get to an operating
position. After that, it will be off until we are in motion again. Best

As everyone knows by now, the ARRL has authorized Rovers to TX-only
their position and allowed Multi-Operator Class stations to receive it
via RF or via Internet. With the contest coming up this weekend, I
thought I'd float some strategies to consider.
1. HamIM (simplex full-feature APRS on a simplex RF frequency) is fully
VHF Contesting compliant and usable by all categories of competitors on
147.585 MHz. However...this is about APRS, so...
2. APRS Rovers: When inputting your call sign, append it with "-15". If
you have an APRS station with -15 already...simply change it. :) If all
rovers use "-15" it will be significantly easier to ID you.
3. APRS Rovers: When selecting your display symbol (in APRS, the
transmitting station sends a token that is translated into a symbol on
the RX end), select the "Little Puppy". This can be done in several
ways: "GPSLP" or "/p" (you'll know which one applies to your particular
situation...I'll spare the lists from the detail.
4. APRS Multi-Operator Stations: If you have Internet access, bookmark
the following URL: http://www.findu. com/cgi-bin/ symbol.cgi? icon=/p
This is a list of all stations IDing with the "puppy" symbol. Scan the
list for those with "-15" at the end and you've found the Rovers!
If you don't have Internet access, then power-up on RF (!) APRS (144.39)
with the knowledge that your KW's on 144.200 will likely totally wipe
out your APRS receiver, but you never know what may sneak in, between
your contest CQ's. :) Avoid QRMing your SSB operations by setting up
your APRS station to RX-only. If you are unaware of the various APRS
clients available...try one of the following:

Thanks to a conversation with Mark (N2MH), a few other items came to
light that will help to maximize your contest-APRS effectiveness. These
apply only to APRS on 144.39 MHz because it deals with DIGIpeating, not
HamIM (which is simplex on 147.585 MHz and has none of these issues).
1. If you are using a TNC, do *not* set it up to be a DIGIpeater to
other stations for any reason or on any alias. The APRS frequency of
144.39 MHz is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too close to the SSB sub-band centered on
144.200 MHz and I'm betting that the self-QRM from your *own* APRS
station's ID will cause you fits...let alone the traffic caused by
having it DIGIpeat others.
2. When launching on APRS, use the path of "WIDE1-1,WIDE3-3". This will
provide you with 4-hops of DIGIpeating, which will be about what your
SSB/CW RF range will be during the contest (yes, this is a generality).
This is *different* than the suggested pathway of "WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2"
because there is a tactical need for it to be...but *only* for the VHF
contest this weekend. Do not leave your Rovers APRS configuration in
that state, after the contest.
3. Test your APRS ID QRM now, before the contest begins. Set your TX
interval to something that won't make your head explode as you have your
volume turned up on 144.200, trying to dig-out a weak one and it
kicks-in. Under no circumstances should your ID be any more frequent
than every 5-minutes. Even when travelling at 60MPH, that is a location
error of only 5-miles. Frankly, every 10 to 15 minutes is probably
plenty. The only risk that you'll assume by longer ID intervals is that
you won't show as having moved from your hilltop until it ID's again.
4. Lastly...remember that APRS is supposed to HELP. If you find that
the self-QRM is unbearable to your contest operation, SHUT IT OFF and
contest. Just remember to turn it on while travelling and not operating
so at least we know you're out there. :)

Hello all for the cold abyss of FM18hk in Virginia
Well it appears that everything here is working and I should be on from
6M
to 10G from my little dungeon at home here in FM18hk.
Hopefully Saturday will bring some form of precepition in which the 5G
and
10G may bounce off of otherwise unless the space shuttle now has 10G I
again
probably won't get to anyone on those bands.
However I will try and now with 8 watts on 10G and the new dish who
knows.
Good to see all the rovers going out, be careful and stay safe.
The coffee pot is ready, the basement is cleaned up, the portable
W4SHG/R
tower is on the Expedition for the 10G stuff and the weekend is coming.
I hope to hear lots of activity.
Remember - "Listen for the weak ones" (W3IY) I certain fit into that
category.

I'm north of you in the MIlwaukee area. Highs are supposed to be in
the single digits on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night/Sunday
morning, it's supposed to be about 7 below. Nope, my days of operating
portable outside in subzero temps (with an FT-736R - no less) are over.
I'll set up portable in my 2nd floor apartment, and take my lumps. Yep,
we're going to have real topnotch condx. this weekend. It's a good
thing I know CW. I'm going to need it. BTW, it's snowing here too.

Skyline Drive is closed today due to snow and ice. It should be warm
enough tomorrow to melt everything, but there is another system due to
hit on Saturday. If that system closes Skyline Drive, I will have to
modify my rover route. It will not be a huge change, but will prevent
any decent views to the West and North West.
Alternate plan B:
Start at parking lot of abandoned hotel on Route 17, near Winchester VA
in FM09xb. Spend a few minutes to gather a few QSOs and move to Chester
Gap in FM08wu. This spot is at 2000 ft with good East, North East and
South East views. It will take 30 to 50 minutes to get to this spot and
I'll stay until 5:00 or until I stop getting new QSOs. I'll then be
back on my previous schedule with the drive to VA Beach via
Charlottesville.

The Stoned Monkey VHF club will be contesting under the call sign N9UHF

just north of McHenry IL in our usual portable and very frozen location,
EN52uj. We are hoping to be on 6, 2, 222, 903 and 1296 at this point.
