Although not what was exactly being asked for, there is a very good Height
Above Average Terrain calculator available at the FCC web site:

_http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/haat_calculator.html_
(http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/haat_calculator.html)

Put in your coordinates and you get the HAAT in all directions, with
resolution selectable down to 1 degree radials.

Note however that it only covers HAAT from 3 to 20 KM, so you still need to
avoid very local terrain features. But if you, or your antennas, clear
anything within that donut hole, you can find out just how good that location
 is.

I have been thinking of this all day, and I don't see how you can make
a meaningful study of "good" places. There are many variables which
will determine how well you do on a contest besides the physical
location, so I don't think you can quantify this.

One thing that all good places have in common is height for the
antennas. Beyond that, things diverge.
