Subject: [WriteLog] Audio Compression Choices under XP when using Recording Feature;Fixing loss of MPEG support

Hi Gang,

Recording contest audio? I have always used MPEG compression with an
acceptable audio quality for the file size generated. I noticed at the
last minute that the MPEG layer 3 was missing from the audio compression
choices in Writelog! I doubt this has anything to do with Writelog.

It may be that when I recently upgraded to Windows Media Player 9, the
MPEG choices were removed in favor of newer Windows Media Audio
Decoder/Encoders (CODECS). In fact, the audio compression choices in
Writelog were fewer than I remembered last fall. Also, the file sizes
for decent audio changed from ~ 9Meg to ~ 40Meg per hour (e.g., PCM 11
kHz, 8 bit, mono, 10 kB/sec selected). This seemed to be one of the few
choices where the audio didn't sound like square waves. But give me a
break on the file size. YIKES.

The solution is to re-install the MPEG CODECS. A nice selection of MPEG
choices is to be found in the Kristal Studios CODEC pack (v 4.3.3).

After installation, start Writelog and the MPEG choices (more than I
used to have) were back! I am satisfied with the audio quality using 16
kbits/s, 12 kHz, mono, 2 k/s. The product file size is back to ~ 9
Mb/hour. Enjoy.

Bob
