Thanks to everyone that responded.
I did get the parallel keying working on my ThinkPad using DirectIO.
Not sure exactly why, but the tip that seemed to help was using DirectIO's
Test32IO.exe program to test the port first then I went back and re-enabled
WriteL32.exe and it worked this time.
