Thanks to all for the replies. It's about an even split between make no
changes to anything, to change the errors, and the EU station will not get
dinged for the QTC differences. Right or wrong, here's my thinking. As a
small time SO1R operator dealing with many propagation issues related to my
high latitude AK location, it is highly unlikely that I will bump someone
out of contention for a high place finish in any contest by correcting a few
log errors. As an example, I worked 4O50A on 20M and logged his call
correctly. He then requested I QSY to 40M and work him there for another
mult. I agreed, we QSY'd to 40M and we worked again. I just discovered
that on the 40M QSO I logged the call as 4O5A, missing the 0 in the call.
I knew full well who I was working, the call is exchanged correctly in the
recording, but I missed one character on the keyboard. So should he lose
the mult because I'm not a perfect typist? Somehow that doesn't seem right.
After many major contests I often receive several anxious email queries from
poor souls desperate to know if they indeed made it into my log and will I
please, please QSL for DXCC, WAS, etc. So I know there are many out there
that need the AK QSL a whole lot more than I need another DL! My concern is
if I actually worked the station, but then fat fingered the keyboard entry
or got dyslexic and reversed the order of two letters when I type it in,
should the DX station be penalized because of my error? If I upload the
blown call to LOTW and eQSL the op in question will never see it. That's
why I always try to record the contest and review it after the fact. My
motivation is not to up my score, but to correct my log so QSL requests will
be satisfied.
The recording feature also provides me an audit trail for those QSL cards I
get that are in fact NILs. If it's not in the log I can go back and replay
what was going on at that moment in time to see if in fact I have blown it.
Often I hear the station in question calling me, but I call another station
for the exchange and never hear the QSL guy again. I assume he didn't catch
that my report was for another station and he logged me even though I did
not respond with his call. NILs remain just that; I do not add a call to my
log just because someone wants a card!
