RTTY is limited to 5 bits, so it has a special set of bits that will switch
it between letters and numbers/puntuation. If you miss that set of bits,
your decoder won't switch. Its not unusual to see this happen in QSOs, but
when it happens in a contest, you need to make sure you get the right serial
number in your log.

Subject: [WriteLog] WPX RTTY
Just a quick and probably stupid question....
This is my first time in the RTTY WPX and was wondering why some stations
send a series of letters instead of a serial number?...WL will not accept
the letters in the number field....I couldn't find anything on the CQ site.
I logged the contacts with a 1 in the field and wrote down what they
sent....for when I know what to put there!...
Thanks,
Mike W2GR
