That reminds me of copying RTTY on 14.7 KHz from NAA in Cutler Maine in the
'60s
when we were submerged in The Barents Sea, when the on-duty Radioman missed
that
the receiver/atmospherics had dropped a shift character when copying
five-character
groups of encrypted text (even though the broadcast itself was encrypted,
there were
super-sensitive messages that were sent as encrypted text), and having to
translate
before we could type the message into the crypto machine. An alert operator
would
manually shift back to character, but I remember one five-page message I had
to manually
deal with prior to decoding.

RTTY is limited to 5 bits, so it has a special set of bits that will switch
it between letters and numbers/puntuation. If you miss that set of bits,
your decoder won't switch. Its not unusual to see this happen in QSOs, but
when it happens in a contest, you need to make sure you get the right serial
number in your log.

Just a quick and probably stupid question....

This is my first time in the RTTY WPX and was wondering why some stations
send a series of letters instead of a serial number?...WL will not accept
the letters in the number field....I couldn't find anything on the CQ site.
I logged the contacts with a 1 in the field and wrote down what they
sent....for when I know what to put there!...

Thanks,

Mike W2GR
