Removing The Front Panel Display Window On The Yaesu FT1000
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The display window may be removed for cleaning in less than one hour
by completing the following steps:
1. Remove the top and bottom covers by removing the three scerws
on each side of the cabinet, two from the back edge of the top,
two from the back edge of the bottom and two from the bottom
cover.
2. Remove the six flat head allen screws (part #36 on page 2-1 of
the
service manual), three on the top and three on the bottom, that
secure
the control unit (shielded module) to the left side of the front
panel.
3. Detach the front panel from the chassis by unplugging the cable
the runs from
the on/off switch to the power supply, remove the two screws
(#36) on the top
of the side of the front panel first and then the two bottom
screws (#36) being
careful to slowly lower the front panel to the work surface.
4. With the front panel laying flat, lift the control unit straight
up without unplugging
any cables and set it aside.
5. Remove the six screws (#13) holding the display board to the
front panel (two on
each end and one on each side).
6. Without unplugging any cables lift up the display board and set
it aside.
7. Remove the two screws (#11) holding the "S" meter in place and
move the meter
to the side.
8. Remove teh three screws (#15) that secure the plastic strip
along the bottom of the
window o the front side of the panel (this strip has YAESU on
the left and FT1000 on
the right). It is this strip that clamps the window to the
front of the panel.
9. After the window has been cleaned, reassemble the radio by
reversing the above
procedure.
NOTE:
There is a brown plastic strip (a light filter) secured to the back
side of the front panel between
the window and the display panel. This strip is glued in place and
can be easily removed by prying
it up, but it is very brittle and will shatter into many pieces if
you try it. the positive side of this is that
the display panel actually emits a bright blue light (similar to
the ICOM and Kenwood radios) and
not yellow. If you would prefer a blue or green display as K4GOR,
simply replace the brown filter with
a blue or green filter.

Folks, not sure at this writing whether the window is plastic or
glass....if it's plastic do not use windex or
other window cleaners as they have abrasives that will scratch the
display window. Use mild liquid dish soap
and dry with a soft cotton cloth (using pats versa wipes). Also, a
light coat of Johnson Pledge will give
the plastic a nice protective coating and help fight electrostatic
micro-dust build-up...which is what got
you into this task in the first place, HAHA. It looks very much like a
fun one evening project...like many of
the old Heath-Kit projects...
