Ok, now I know why I signed up for this reflector!
Thanks to all who replied with advice ... I have a bucket full of ideas
to try including burying (very shallow) the wire as it crosses the
gravel driveway. Apparently, my oak/pine forest, being considerably
more open than a jungle is far less of an issue than I had assumed.
Sometimes I forget that, at 1.8 MHz, lots of large, optically opaque
things are transparent..
Most common suggestion is to experiment, which I shall do on the sunny
days (unfortunately, it DOES rain and snow a little in N. California!)
