Topband: salt the ground?

Coincidentally, I was searching on this 
topic today, except I was interested in
using salt to prevent weeds from growing
around my verticals.  I found a
fairly long discussion on garden web:

Bottom line:  salt is an extremely good
herbicide and soil sterilant.  Don't
try to use it to increase conductivity
if you ever want to grow anything in the
area.
