I also used pole mounted beams many years ago, as did many other hams.

A very important point that applies to any load bearing holes drilled into a
pole:  the holes must be drilled perpendicular to the grain of the pole.
Holes parallel to the grain will split the pole from the load,   This same
principle applies pole step holes.
