I shunt feed a US Tower HDX55 with a TH7 at 57 ft and a Cushcraft XM240 at 
70 ft.  It works quite nicely.  I also shorted my parasitic elements to the 
boom in a similar manner to Gene.  I built a 12v remote tuning unit using a 
8 rpm motor and a vacuum variable.  Used number 4 insulated wire for the 
shunt and tapped the tower at the top of the first section ( 24 ft).  Did 
not bond the other two sections.  I got lucky and can tune it on 160M and 
80M.  Hope this helps.
