Then how about tapping off the 12V AC.
There is nothing special about wall warts, except they often make RFI, 
and they charge for them when generally we have a better source handy. 
OTOH there are such things as small battery chargers that need current 
limiting but that is typically done int he charger, and not the wall wart.
