There are a number of whole house systems available that run on natural

convenient and economical to run, BUT it also depends on the mains and
in large scale outages could be problematic.
I don't remember who makes/sells them but a whole house diesel running
15 to 25 KW with auto start and auto transfer would probably run less
than 10 grand. They even start up and warm up either once a week or once
a month.
I have a 10 KW gas unit with a manual transfer switch. It'll run
everything except the air conditioner.
I've been thinking of installing between a 15 to 25 KW unit with either
LPgas or diesel. The problem with natural gas is as more people keep
adding them the supply lines aren't large enough. Availability in case
of a major, long term outage could also be a problem.. OTOH they are
probably the most economical to run.

Not sure about size, but Onan makes some very quiet ones for motor homes...
