I actually liked his technique, except for the Dremel tool cutting the
braid.
I agree Jerry, I think the average ham would have problems doing it that
way :-)
I do the braid trimming differently. My elmer taught me to tin the braid,
then use a small tubing cutter adjusted to just barely go thru the
tinned braid,
spin it around several times, pull off the remaining left over braid,
and voila a nice clean cut.
I should mention he taught me this in 1957 when I was a novice, I still use
this technique. :-)
Why do we still use the old ways ? I think a good ham radio analogy
would be sending CW. I now use an electronic keyer most of the time.
Great devices, spacing between characters, and duration of the dahs and
dits
automatically made for you, just dial in the speed you want. I used a
bug for many
years. Today I use a keyer for chasing DX, but for CW ragchewing I
still enjoy using the
old Vibroplex.
As you said, old habits die hard.

And complete overkill. How many tools did he use in that video? Soldering
iron, razor blade, air compressor, Dremel tool, file, pliers, dikes. I
especially like how he cuts through the tinned braid and dielectric by free
handing a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel--I'll bet your average ham would
have no problems with that move. ;-)
I'm perplexed, but not really surprised, that hams still insist on using
this kind of backwoods engineering when a better way has been available for
decades. I guess old habits die hard.
