​I have had one for over 20 years.  First thing I did was to disconnect the 
"rabbit ears" and connect the input to a BNC connector.  I use a 4 element 144 
mhz.  Works just fine.

MFJ also makes an ultrasonic detector with a parabolic dish.  This has not been 
useful (yet).
