I have folder on my hard drive called "Severns."   In it, I have almost every antenna article Rudy has written.  I say "almost" because he is a prolific experimenter and writer and it's hard to keep up.

Personally, I subscribe to the idea that the radials should approximate the height of the vertical radiator. For my 160 meter L, that's 55 feet.  I can get nine 55' radials out of a 500 foot spool of wire.  So far I've only laid down only two spools worth, with plans (and wire) for 18 more radials.  They are 14 AWG THHN and stapled down to the desert.  By serendipity, I measured the input impedance of one radial against all of the others and it's resonant at 1.84 MHz.

Well said Steve., although "as long as you can" has reasonable limits as to what's optimal for a given frequency and overall radial count.

N6LF's article should be first stop for anyone serious about the topic.  I assume that K3LC Al's conclusions on optimal length vs. count would match up roughly with N6LF's.  The key point here is that from getting the best bang for your radial investment, there's both count and length to consider.
