Comments:
REALLY enjoyed this one. Got off to a slow start Friday night and retired
at 10:30. Heard lots of Eu on 160 with a high noise level and few coming
back to me. I figured Eu was all over the band working each other. Pretty
much the same on 80 as I couldnt get much going.
Up at 4AM after not being able to sleep all night and picked up a few Qs on
160 and 80 before going to 40. Immediate answers to CQ were a VK6 and VK2,
followed by many more VJ, VL anVKs, and the loudest JAs I can recall on
40. After a few more good catches moved to 14086. I have to get over the
feeling I have to go high in the band and find lower frequencies to squeeze
into because as good as the rate was, I think it's best lower in the band.
My best run was on 14000.59 later in the contest!...Hi.
At one point, I cant remember if on 40 or 80, the noise floor was eerily
quiet but there were still plenty of stations. At another time there were
so many dipoles and verticals calling from Eu on 40, that it felt too much
like work pulling them out. Although I was able to, I decided it was easier
to just wait for another loud station which didnt take long. This is my
30th year in retirement (and 70th year in ham radio) and I was just out
for a good time.
It was great having loud VU's call in. I probably RAN 95% of the time and
knew it would be easy to meet my 1000 Q goal. When I reached that I upped
the bar to 2000 or 2M whichever came first. With the great condx I reached
both goals.
