Rob -- If it were updated and some circuit improvements made, the
TL-922 would be a winner. Fortunately, used 922s become available from
time to time. For someone who knows how to solder, a 922 is an
excellent opportunity to advance above the rank of appliance operator.
-- However the basic problem in Japanese companies is 'ringesho' - a
Japanese term meaning that only ideas for improvement that come from
the CEO himself can be used. Thus, in the beginning, if the CEO of
Trio-Kenwood had used a spectrum analyzer to discover that the 922 has
an intermittent osc. problem at 110 - 120 MHz, and he set about making
the amplifier more stable, the 922 would probably still be produced
