[Amps] why did Heath die?

Well, Heathkit didn't actually die, they are still very much in business. It is just that they got out of the electronic kit business.

Basically, it was due to economics. When the Japanese got into producing amateur radio equipment the prices dropped to the point that it was possible to purchase a completely built unit for the same, or even less, price than you had to pay for a Heathkit.

A lot of the incentive for purchasing a kit was the cost factor. Building the kit yourself was a "perk", but the main reason was that you could get a unit that worked very well for substantially less than you could purchase a "ready built" unit. But, when the price of "ready built" units dropped then the lure of building your own to save money was eliminated.
