If the part-time contest is because "family" then ...

If you can't get 2 weekends a year for SS, which 4% of the weekends, for
a serious all weekend effort, then your family/wife/friend/dog/cat is very 
selfish. If you throw in both weekends for CQ WW, then your up to 8%. If my 
math is right, that means they get the 92%. Not a bad deal. Throw in a 
RTTY contest or two and your only up to 12%. What's the problem? The other
88% of the time your doing what THEY want.

If the part-time contest is to get more invovled, then I think it will
probably fail miserably. Why? The guys that just missed the regional
box will cream the casual Sunday afternoon driver, and casual driver 
will go away saying, "I can't compete".

PINS are a great incentive to get the casual guy in for a 100 Q's. Maybe
the PINS should be for a 100 on Sunday. Or maybe a PINS for 100 and a 
small patch for "100 on Sunday". We need to ....

    A) market the PINS to more operators

    B) to get both you need to do 100 Saturday and 100 on Sunday.

    C) get more slow ops like me to operate all weekend at 18/20 wpm 
       'cause working the guys doing 30 is not fun.

    D) figure out why the guys on 14.300 and 14.230 won't give us Q's 
       but just tell us to go away.

Being the guy who developed the ARRL test procedure, I suppose I
qualify as an expert on this....

Phase noise will effectively broaden 40 meter broadcast stations to
the point where there are no holes in the band for you to hear through.

Thus, QRPers running simple little radios will hear  just fine, and
work other QRP stations amidst the garbage when the band is open
to Europe.  These same stations will wonder why you can't hear
anything with your phase noisy radio, even when you are pounding
in with a good signal.

This is only a problem with good antennas or very strong signals.
Those using good imitations of dummy loads need not worry about
phase noise.  I think some radio designers didn't realize there was
 a problem because they never experienced situations where it
was a factor--nothing like the (NCJ?) Sprint to generate huge
signals that make phase noise really noticeable.

Finally, keep in mind that noise/interference is ***NOT***
reciprocol.

Stations on the East coast usually get QRMed by European broadcast
much earlier than Midwesterners--there is a period of time when
stations with great receivers or directional antennas do much
better working West (hearing-wise)

Just because K1AR is S2 on 15 meter scatter does not mean
the frequency is clear to Europe by any stretch of the imagination.

True, you can't be heard by all.  However, it is surprisingly easy to work
DX  that nobody else can hear (because of your great array).

Subject: Married vs Single Contesters

I must have the most understanding XYL. She enjoys sports and looks
forward to me playing radio so she can watch baseball, football, or
whatever without me complaining.

With this arrangement, I've been able to enter any contests as a
mobile op as I please without any flack. She's studying the code so
she can get on the air too. Then I'm sure we'll compete over who gets
the rig!
