W2CRS/0 multi (with Paul, KF7MD) COLORADO
Paul KF7MD and I operated multi again this year. Last year we were 912 x 84
and 157K for 22nd place multi (well, I can't sleep the entire time Paul is
operating) and our goal was 1000 x 85 this year. Well, we didn't quite make
it. We ended up with 985 x 85 for about 174,335.
Equipment: Modified 52' Hytower and full wave loop averaging 30' above
ground.
Old FT-102 with no memory or A/B VFO and Paul's TS-680S
for working split for JAs. Ten Tec Titan at KW. NA software.
Highlights: working S58A, ON4UN, and G3LNS (he called us) plus 15 JA.
Only DX we heard, but didn't work was ZD8Z. I said we'd wait to 2nd night,
but he was a no show second night, I think. Missed MAR and VI. Conditions
seemed average (I missed the great 160M conditions last weekend while
visiting relatives).

3 Watts ; 1/2 length G5RV, shorted and tuned as long wire.

QSOs: 80 Points: 160 Sections: 27 Claimed score: 4,320
Really just intended to listen for a while to see what
things sounded like, but thought I'd try shorting out
the two sides of the G5RV and tuning it as a long wire.
It worked, kind of. Was able to get the SWR down to about
1.8 to 1, but the usable bandwidth was narrow. For some
reason, couldn't get it to tune at all at the very low end.
Was surprised when I started working folks, so kept at it
for a while. Thanks to all who struggled to pull me
through.
Obviously, results were mainly from S&P, but did manage a
three QSO "run" an hour or so after sunrise Sunday.
Band conditions seemed quite good here and there was little
noise at this QTH. Found I was hearing things others weren't
at all. N6TR/7 had nice signal here Sunday morning, but
didn't manage to work him. Called W0SD on and off much of
Sunday AM, but couldn't snag him.

Most of our ops left Friday night, so it was basically three of us for
the majority of the contest.
As everyone else has said, 160M was GREAT! We've never heard or worked
so many europeans. I was the 20M op, and with the exception of a few
hours on Friday night, it seemed like the band was open all night long.

Not much here for the ARRL 160 but here it is anyway:
103 Q's 209 pts 41 sec's 1 cty = 8,778

equip: IC736, MLA2500B, Inv L (up 60' out 65')
IBM 8088, CT 7.06
soap: rig is borrowed and has no cw filtering- did not mke it conducive
to many hours of cw contesting. I just made few contacts whenever I came
into the shack. Band seemed to be in reasonble shape and I heard some DX
but my peanut whistle can't break pile-ups on 160. This is a band I have
a lot of room for improvement on.
BIG signal on band is N6DX- VE3EJ close behind. Missed KH6CC- was he on?

Dear Friends,
This contest, for me, was a chance to try and improve the
160 meter antenna situation. 160 is my weakest band by far,
and I thought I would just start all over and see what
happened with the antennas. Did only casual operating and
called few CQs as I did not believe the antenna/signal was
good enough to get a run going by CQing. Must admit that I
did enjoy the tempo of this contest as I knew I did not have
a chance and really enjoyed working the 103 stations that I
mangaged to work.
Decided to put up an inverted V whose apex was only at 75'
and that antenna did quite well for the East Coast and east
of the Missippi River. The vertical seemed to work
everything I heard (not much) with ease as long as the
station was far away. Tuned across the band around 0400 and
was able to work all the Europeans I heard with ease. Was
unable to even hear those Europeans on the inverted V,
however the V was stronger on everything arriving at a high
angle --- pretty much text book stuff!
A friend dropped by and asked me how I like having a 50 KW
AM station so close to me.....My jaw dropped and I asked
John, what was he talking about. It seems that I have a
powerful 24 hr a day AM broadcast station located on the
top of the next ridge, which is about 5 miles away. This
station is at the top of the band too. Perhaps, just
perhaps, I have found out why I cannot hear much of weak
signals on this band!
Methinks its time for some nice notch filters and a perhaps
not realistic hope that the signal coming from the ridge is
nice and clean. This event reminds me of what I told my
wife Nancy about building contest stations --- it takes
about 3 years to get all the bugs worked out, that is if you
can find all of them.
Looking forward to getting the 950 back so I can start
listening on the EWEs that are up for 160 --- using the
transmitting antennas all the time just does not work on
this band!
The highlight of the contest was Nancy (XYL) saying that I
should just put up another tower that is high enough for 160
so things will work.....ummmmmm.
Hopefully all the contest community will have an enjoyable
holiday season!!

Sorry about not posting this sooner but have been REAL busy with CQWW
CW scores. I will wait one more week before I make the final posting
for this contest. So if you got scores get them in now. I will not
modify the final posting period.
A note to everyone about any scores sent to me. Please put in the subject
line which contest it is. After this weekend I could be getting scores
from three different contests. Simple SS, CQWW, or 160 will be enough.
One request please and that is send me your section also. Being a small
pistol I only compete against the guys in my area. I know a lot of them
but with people moving in, you never know. You can take the list and
break it down anyway you want that way. Of course you cannot go by the
call. Feel free to email it to me if you have already sent your score.
Please remember when sending me email about correcting anything that
you include your call. I have no way of knowing who you are. Also if
you send in your score and do not see it within a short time, just wait.
I am waiting till I have quiet a few scores before I send out a posting.
This should help to cut down on bandwidth.
Anyone who sends me a score with no class on it will be put into the B
class. Feel free to email me and I will correct it.

I rarely operate 160. Only recently did I put up a "real" antenna
for the band (droopy bendy inv vee @ 35 ft.). Ignorance of the band plan is
no excuse, but I ended up in the "window" about 4 PM local time and called CQ
because it was nice and quiet there - DUH!. After a nice little run of about
10 Q's somebody came on freq sending "window,window,window,....." while I was
trying to complete a Q with a weak station. I said "OK, QRX" so I could finish
the Q. All I got was more "window,window,window.....". By God, I was going to
finish that QSO if it took ALL NIGHT! I finally did and thanked the policeman
for being such an *$$#ole. I immediately QSY'd after waiting for any response
which there was none. So, are you saying I should be disqualified? I screwed
up and quickly moved when I found out my error.
Perhaps, the better idea would be to have the Contest Sponsor send a
notice
to the offender when they submit their log and inform them offically of the
error.
The notice could say that future violations will mean DQ'n since they are now on
record as a known offender. Over a couple years, this could get things
cleaned up
fairly well, except for blunderers like myself who you'll never clean out
totally.
>From what I saw later in the Contest, the major offenders are the Big Gun
stations
who may feel they're above rules they don't agree with or are too important to
be trifled with. I feel a ramped approach would be better overall.

(P.S. After reading my response, it sorta reminded me of the Clinton approach to
scaring the Bosnian Serbs in compliance with Peace terms. I.E., don't cross
that
line or you'll be in big trouble. OK, you crossed it, but if you cross this one
you'll really make us mad. OK, well you crossed that one too, but if you cross
this new line you'll REALLY be in BIG trouble. Gee, you did it again, now cross
this newer line and you'll be in HEAP BIG BAD trouble. Darn, you crossed
another
one......ad nauseum. And for similarity, I truly apoligize.)

CT Version 9 Users,
I wonder if anyone else ran into this problem? I've been using CT 9
since it came
out. Whenever a new version appears on the CT-BBS I download and use it. I
use LPT2 for
my CW keying interface to my ICOM xcvr. During SS/CW all was fine with 9.26.
This weekend was the ARRL 160 Contest. I set up everything as it
was during SS/CW
and found I couldn't ket the radio. I started playing around verifying
cabling, programming
of the radio and computer, etc, etc. Nothing seemed to fix it and time was
wasting. So, I
just used my regular keyer and entered the QSO data seperately. All I could
think of was that
the keying interface built from the CT Manual got zapped somehow and I'd
have to get new parts
and fix it during Saturday daylight hours when 160 would be stinko.
With new parts in hand I built a new interface according to the
manual for a LPT. But,
it still didn't work. So, now I reconfigured the keying interface to
operate from a serial port.
That worked. Now I decided my parallel ports got hosed up after I installed
some other new
software to be used on the InterNet. At least I was back in business using
CT as it was intended.
When the Contest ended, I began to wonder again what might have
happened to screw up the
CW keying from my LPT ports. YIKES! I then remembered that I had just
upgraded CT from 9.26 to
9.27 a few days before the Contest. Could that have done something evil to
my CW capability? Naw,
no way. Just for grins, I reloaded 9.26 and wired back in the parallel
circuit to LPT2. It worked!
What the heck?? So, I closed CT down and reloaded CT 9.27 (again). It
didn't work on LPT's, but
only worked on a serial port.
All I can figure is that whenever the CT guys fixed whatever caused
9.27 to be coded, they
crashed the LPT CW keying ability that worked in 9.26 and earlier. Hey,
stuff happens.
I tried calling the CT-BBS, but it didn't answer (thought it was 24
hour, 7 days). If they
have an InterNet address, I can't find what it is.
Am I the only one that had this problem? Oh well, at least now I am
prepared for either
serial or parallel port keying as needed. Also, I really appreciate having
CT send out all the
CQ's, exchanges, etc. a LOT more than I used to after having to do it
manually for 1/2 the Contest.
