Here some of the interesting things that happened during
last weekend's SSB Sweepstakes here at N4UK.
     Worked 48 QRP stations.
Had a gentlemen on 40 meters call me and say " If you want
to work Idaho qsy up 5 and I'll give you a contact. You are
qrming a swap net out here" My response, " I don't hear the
net,I don't anything for sale and I already worked Idaho.73 QRZ
N4UK".
I was called by a mobile station. After I gave him the
exchange he proceeded to ramble on about "ham radio being for
ragchewing only", and "isn't talking what ham radio is all
about?" My response "qrz n4uk". He was sporting a recently
issued 2x3 and was clueless. Funny how some people believe that
you should do what they do and that it is the only correct thing
to do.
Throughout the night on 40 meters I had numerous jammers try to
break my runs. I heard whistling, a very bad cw tone,cw,etc.
Do these jokers really believe that their qrm is going to be
worse than the BC qrm??? They truly are clueless.
On Saturday morning a WB5 starts calling his buddies 1 kc
from a frequency I had been on for hours. When I told him the
frequency was in use he responded by telling me that the
frequency he was on has been in use for the last 30 years by
himself and his friends. He was intentionally qrming me and
didn't give a damn. You would think that if these poor lonely
old slobs missed a weekend of talking about their aches and
pains with their friends that they believed they would die.Talk
about NO LIFE.
I don't know which qrm is worse on 40
meters, the Broadcast stuff or when the band goes long to w7 and
w6!
I also had a few exchanges without the callsign. I had to
ask to get it. The guys that were running without giving their
call again as part of the exchange should be warned about
possible DQ! Not DQed, but warned for the next time. They did
NOT follow the rules as CLEARLY stated by the ARRL.
Some guys would ask if the frequency was in use and then
start calling CQ Contest a Millisecond later. An unused slice of
frequency was gobbled up in mere seconds if the other guy
calling was longwinded on his exchange. I would get real antsy
when the other guy was slow knowing that any second a big gun
was going to start calling CQ right on top of him or very close
to him. It really paid to keep the spacing between CQs extremely
short in this contest even if it meant an occasional double with
a delayed caller.
It was a lotta fun saying hello to guys by name and
having them ask "who's this" The new call worked great and cuts
through the QRM nicely. I did have a few stations swear that my
CQ box was saying N3UK instead of N4UK. I listened to it
repeatedly and it was clearly saying N4UK. Was there a
"meaconing" station on my frequency???
Ya gotta love the guys with the Js and Gs in their call who
use non standard phonetics that swap the J sound for the letter
G. Personally,it temporarily confuses the hell out of me! How
about the guys that called you without phonetics and then got
pissed that you broke the call?
I'm perplexed about the abundant calls now being used that
have the suffix TR. Talk about a jumbled mess of TRs.Wouldn't it
be better to have a call that stands apart from everyone else.
We all who the real N6TR is!
Was called by K1AR and said "Hi Joe" My apologies John...
Enough rambling... No active contesters in the Greenville,SC
area so this is my Contest Repeater of sorts. 73 Ken N4UK

Must be one the the WIPS (Works In Progress) cases that Gettysburg is
working, since the effective date is 4 Nov 96. Wouldn't think that he
would make a mistake on his application though. The database also
shows a callsign grant of K0AO to the ETO Amateur Radio Club
effective 19 Nov 96!!!

Without wanting to start another "vanity thread", todays FCC report
shows Dick Ehrhorn, W4ETO, is now W0ID.
