I have always used "73" as an acknowledgment that someone took the time and
trouble to call me. A bit parochial, perhaps, but I think contests are first
and foremost a sport of gentlemen (and, more recently, ladies). With the
latest software, cranking the "73" up to 38WPM is my only concession. On
phone, there is no time difference in any salutation, although I often use
"Thanks!" 
Also, when we stop acknowledging friends by name because it might effect our
score, it will be time to hang up the spurs and take up needlepoint.
