[CQ-Contest] Xcvrs as carry-ons

On my trip to Windwood I had to power up my 751A before leaving
Philadelphia. I carried it on just wrapped in bubble wrap. Had the YL carry
the power cord in her purse so we were passed thru with no delay. I think
the worse is on the other end when customs in the foreign country wants to
look and see how much to charge you. So you must plan on resealing cartons
or suitcase on the spot. I checked a MLA 2500 in a hard sided suitcase after
securing the power supply with a couple of drops of thread lock. Carried the
tubes in carry on. Upon arriving I opened the case to install the tubes and
everything came thru the baggage simians with no problem. Perhaps I was
lucky. That was the day I learned not to trust an interlock :-) the hard
way.

The only problem I ever had was in the security check at Grand Cayman. I
had the my FT-990 wrapped in a large beach towel and then placed in a soft
carry-on bag. The inspector asked me to unpack it so she could inspect it,
then started grilling me with a multitude of questions. She wanted to know
how much it cost, how much it was worth, what frequencies it used, how much
power it generated, etc., etc. Finally she got to the bottom line: would I
sell it to her so she could use it to talk to her family in Honduras on 40m
SSB?
