And how does one obtain that skill?

I'll agree that a poor operator is a lid, no matter how many radios he 
uses. But you can't fault people for trying to improve their skills.

Still, I can't see any legitimate way for an inexperienced SO2R op to 
"take up" more than one frequency at a time.

SO2R is really a misnomer. It's really SO 2R 1T (single operator, two 
receiver, one transmitter). It appears to be a continuing myth amoung 
some SO1R ops that those with two radios transmit on more than one 
frequency at a time. It just isn't so.
