Roxio ( www.roxio.com ) has a product called Easy CD Creator (I think Roxio is
a spin-off of Adaptec). Anyway, their software driver allows you to write to a
CD using its default drive letter, just as you would to the hard drive or a ZIP
disk. If your backup software supports backing up to any drive letter (I use
BackAgain II by Computer Data Strategies, Inc. - www.cds-inc.com ) then you can
back up right to the CD ROM. This won't work unattended, of course, if you are
backing up more than 700M or so of data. BAII also can create a
disaster-recovery floppy if you need to restore your system from a fatal crash.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] The worst of the worst posts?
Message-ID: <001d01c12137$90393270$ede3c23f at kr6x.org>
In case my sense of humor and perhaps excessive involvement in matters
relating to amateur radio contesting have been lost to anyone reading
my posts on the subject of "the best of the best", I'd like to correct
and clarify two particular comments that I've made during the series
of posts.
The first correction I'd like to make relates to my comments regarding
the vote that I attributed to Bob, KQ2M. At the time I wrote that,
Bob and I were engaged in a gentlemanly discussion of his
understanding of my views on the merits of operators in the NorthEast.
I admit that for a while I was insensitive to Bob's legitimate
concerns over the position he was taking in our discussion, and if my
writings were taken literally it could be certainly be interpreted as
a fabrication. Bob did not vote twice for everyone in the Eastern
half of the US. This was merely a joke that I was attempting, and my
sense of humor was the motivation for including that comment. Bob did
not provide a long list of operators in the Northeast, nor did he ever
vote twice. Bob did voice his opinions passionately in our exchange
of ideas, and I hope that most of the readers of this list will
interpret my comments as an expression of his passion. I apologise to
Bob for any discomfort that this may have caused him.
The second correction I'd like to make relates to the original post I
made in this series. When I originally wrote that my votes were
predominately for operators in the Western half of the US, as were the
votes of the many that preceeded me, I did not seriously intend to say
that those in the Western half of the US are better than those in the
Eastern half of the US, nor to say that those in the US are better
than those in other countries. That has been misunderstood by Bob,
and perhaps by many other readers on the reflector. My intention was
to hint that the selection process that has led to so many votes for
those in the Western half of the US has been distorted by some
factors, and left it to the remainder of the readers on the reflector
to provide both votes for the remainder of the world and an objective
discussion as to why the selection process may be distorted and how it
could be corrected.
Evidently, judging by the return comments, there may at least have
been a few who misunderstood my intentions, although this was
primarily from areas of the world where English is spoken as a second
language and miscommunications might therefore be considered more
likely. One post in particular comes to mind, although I'm not sure
if the critique was of my comments or of those who made their own
selections before me. If any other serious miscommunication has taken
place, my apologies are offered as well.
The unfortunate thing is that few have read my post and been motivated
to take the opportunity to carry the new thread forward; there still
may have been fewer votes for the world at large than for operators in
or from the Western half of the US in the subsequent posts, or at the
very least the operators from the West have continued to receive
inflated attention. I don't fault those who've voted in this; their
votes have been generally good choices.
All of the above having been said, I feel it necessary to warn that I
don't really intend to eliminate satire or humor from my future posts,
and I hope to receive many more e-mails similar to the series of
communications I've received from Bob. His passion is commendable,
and his openess may be unique within our sport. Sorry again, Bob,
that my statements have been so easily misunderstood.
There's plenty more to be said here, but I'd like this statement to
stand alone so that it's meaning will be clear.

Let's ask N6MJ. He seems to be well on the way.

With all due respect, I don't think this is even an issue. When most
of us in the USA got into amateur radio, we had no interest in CW
either, beyond the 13 WPM milestone. Other countries generally had
even lower speed tests at entry into ham radio.
And truth be told, my guess is that a majority of current contesters
never bother to dust off their Vibroplex between contests either,
except for an occasional "new-new-one" for DXCC.
