Regarding soundcards:
IMHO, using a soundcard is the only way to go for DVP. The main reason is
that you can produce .wav files with an editor, so you can optimize each
file, e.g., by adjusting volume of sections of it, cutting out pauses, etc.
You can also have a variety of recordings available, so they can be reused
for each contest without rerecording them each time. My homebrew software
CQPWIN, uses this technique, as does Writelog, and when properly done, it is
just the same as sending messages on CW using the function keys.
Regarding the rig interface, you might try something very simple, if you
don't have rf problems in the shack. I simply take the output of the
soundcard into the phone patch input on my TS950SDX with no interface at
all, and it works fine. Similarly, putting it into the ACC jack on the back
of my second radio, a TS-570 also works (although in that case, the PTT also
has to be done at the ACC jack, since it is designed for digital modes).
I'm sure it would be better practice to use isolation transformers and level
controls, but I have not found it to be necessary for my station.
So give it a go, and you'll be very pleased on Sunday afternoon in SS, hi.
