Chris, this is still an excellent idea for your case. The area
above 1850 should not be crowded in EU since most Region 1 stations cannot
transmit above 1850. For those that cannot, they must be crowded in amongst
all the other EU calling CQ below 1850 with a poor chance of hearing weaker
Region 2 stations calling. For those who cannot transmit above 1850, it
would definitely be preferable to listen for NA split outside the Region 1
1810-1850 "QRM window" IMHO. In general the area above 1850 is relatively
uncrowded in NA except for a few SSB nets and the WA0RCR AM Broadcast station
on 1860...ask the KC1XX/W3LPL/K3LR guys if your frequency is clear when they
call you!

You may find some US stations calling CQ on 1843 and above but this
is unlikely in the CQWW except for the few multi-multi stations or a very
limited number of guys doing single band 160. Topband is not productive
enough for most SOAB or multi-single stations to run CQ's other than in
multiplier S&P mode. Your only risk may be landing near a NA station you
cannot hear but who may be covering your frequency...but ask a few NA guys
if your frequency is clear. Most knowledgeable 160 operators in NA know to
tune above 1850 for DX that can transmit there and those that don't will
probably hear others calling you. Of course Packet spots will also make
your presence known for multiops and single op assisted guys.

Good luck and feel very fortunate that you can operate outside the
1810-1850 EU QRM window! The name of the game on 160 is HEARING. Anything
you can do to maximize your hearing ability while staying away from stonger
EU stations who may cover you will definitely help. Also remember that
most single-op's make a practice of checking 160 for multipliers roughly at
03-07 UTC on the hour (i.e. 0300, 0400, etc).

                                                73, Bill W4ZV
