Yes, but what can you buy for that money?
IOW, how does housing compare? how does the cost of a suit
compare? etc.

I ran those comparisons for different parts of the country
I've lived in for more than a couple of years (e.g. Wayne,
NJ; Philly; Denver; Seattle; Carson City, Nev) and found
them sadly lacking in the *real* issues.  Some of these
sites did try to create a cost-of-living "basket" where
these issues were factored in, but they still leave a lot to
be desired.

I ran a salary comparison between Lee's Summit, Missouri
(rapidly developing
suburb of Kansas City, MO), and Newington, CT.  A $25,000
salary in  Lee's
Summit, MO compares to a $31,928 salary in Newington, CT...a
relative
percent difference of 24%. That's a significant cost
difference in my
opinion.
